Charter a jet to the Hong Kong Sevens
The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series makes its 43rd return to Hong Kong Stadium, marking the seventh round of the 10-leg 2017/18 season. Charter a private jet to Hong Kong, spiritual home of the seven-a-side rugby series, and enjoy this three-day, 70-match event, watching the best sevens teams in the world play live.
The Hong Kong Sevens was started in 1975 by English expat Rodney Bentham-Wood and South African Tokkie Smith, who was then the Hong Kong Rugby Club Chairman. Since then, it has become a staple in the world of premier sports and one of Asia’s most popular sporting events. Each year, the Hong Kong Sevens attracts the best rugby players, teams and fans from every corner of the globe to its iconic Hong Kong Stadium.
Since its inaugural game in 1976, when 12 teams played in front of 3,000 spectators, the Hong Kong Sevens has grown and now hosts 28 teams from 22 countries, drawing 120,000 fans to the stadium over the three-day period. The Rugby Sevens Series qualifier underwent major changes in 2013 after World Rugby (WR), formerly known as the International Rugby Board (IRB), imposed a formal promotion and relegation process for the Sevens core teams. Today, 16 of the 28 teams are divided into pools and compete for points: three points for a win, two for a draw and one for a loss.
Since 2013, the top two teams in each pool advance to the Cup and Plate tournaments, while the remaining teams compete in the Bowl and Shield tournaments. The losers of the Cup quarter-finals move down to the Plate tournament, while the losers of the Bowl tournament drop down to the Shield tournament. Fiji is currently both the reigning Hong Kong Sevens champion and the games’ all-time top winner, having secured 17 Hong Kong Sevens Championship Cups.
