History of The Hampton Classic

The Hampton Classic has officially been running for over 75 years, but it can be traced back as far as the 1900s when it was known as the annual Southampton Horse Show. The event was suspended during the World Wars and eventually reinstated in the 70s when it was extended to five days. In 2009, the show was awarded Heritage Competition Status and it’s now one of the largest outdoor horse events in the country, featuring some of the world’s top riders and horses.

Often referred to as The Classic, the show is held at the 65-acre show ground at 240 Snake Hollow Road in Bridgehampton. The highlight is the $300,000 Grand Prix which takes place on the final Sunday. A-list celebrities, socialites, and business leaders including Jon Bon Jovi, Brooke Shields, and Jerry Seinfeld attend and even take part in the show. In 2016, actress Mary-Kate Olsen had four horses in The Classic, while Bruce Springsteen’s daughter Jessica competed in the Open Jumper Division.
