About March Madness
The NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament began in 1908, when the Illinois High School Association sponsored a league of eight teams that grew to include over 900 schools by the late 1930s. The competition was first dubbed March Madness in 1939, when high school coach Henry V. Porter described the frenzied excitement surrounding the event.
Half the teams in the tournament automatically qualify after winning big Division 1 conference games throughout the season, while the rest are selected by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Every team is then ranked by the NCAA according to a special judging system.
