About the Kentucky Derby
The Kentucky Derby was launched in 1875 by American colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., who built Churchill Downs Racetrack after being inspired by England’s Epsom Derby to create a national horse-racing event in the United States.
Today the Kentucky Derby is America’s longest-running sporting event and one of the most prestigious Grade 1 races in the world, often referred to as the ‘most exciting two minutes in sport’. It’s also the first race in the Triple Crown of thoroughbred racing, followed later in the year by the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
The derby features three-year-old thoroughbreds running 2km, with male horses carrying 57kg and fillies 55kg. Using a points system, the 20 highest-scoring horses from 35 lead-up races are automatically entered into the event. Race weekend also includes the Kentucky Oaks, America’s premier Grade 1 race for three-year-old fillies, which has a $1 million prize.
