The scent of chestnuts roasting is a trademark of the cooler months in Italy, but the bustling town of Cuneo takes this humble nut to devotional heights with its annual National Chestnuts Fair, now in its 18th year. The marrones in the city of Cuneo are a sweeter, more flavorful variety than their American cousins, and lend themselves beautifully to cakes, soups and pastries. In addition to chestnuts, hundreds of local purveyors gather to sell some of the best produce in all of Italy, including big bundles of garlic, crisp apples, fresh goat cheese and roasted meats. Every Fall foodies flock to Alba, the white truffle capital of Italy, to taste this elusive treat. While the prized tubers are difficult to find in the wild, they can be found by the basketful at the annual White Truffle Fair, now in its 86th year. Here, you can sniff, taste and buy truffles, as well as wines, liqueurs, Piedmontese hazelnuts, and cheeses from the gastronomic regions of Langhe and Roero. The Truffle Show, open Saturdays and Sundays, features a lineup of demonstrations and presentations on the truffle by world-class chefs.
