It originates from World War I, when the War Department leased 407 acres of land north of Americus to build a primary training airfield and aviation supply depot and was named Souther Field. It was renamed to Jimmy Carter Regional in October 2009. Jimmy Carter Regional Airport covers 378 acres of land and has two asphalt paved runways.
