The airport was licensed as the first municipal airport in Michigan in February 1929, and was named Lindbergh Field in honour of famous aviator Charles Lindbergh. In 1961 an airport traffic tower was built and the runway was extended. Western Michigan University used Kalamazoo Battle Creek Airport as a base for its flight school until 1997.
