Originally Lubbock International Airport, it was renamed in 2004 for former Texas governor Preston E. Smith, an alumnus of Texas Tech University. This is the 8th busiest airport in Texas, with an average of 214 airline operations a day. The airport was first opened in 1937 and in 1942 the United States Air Force took over the airport as a Flying Training Command. In 1947 the Air force ceased using the airport and returned it to the local government.
