Mackinac Island Airport started as a grass strip in 1934 and got the runway paved in 1963. A terminal building was only built in 1969. In 2012 a $4.6 million project moved the runway 65 feet east to a flatter location. According to the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, the airport has been categorized as a general aviation facility.
