Interestingly it was partially constructed from the decommissioned Wurtsmith Air Force Base, which housed nuclear armed B-52 Stratofortress bombers during the Cold War. It is a very large facility covering an area of 2,000 acres and possesses a very long runway. Despite its size it is not a particularly busy airport, carrying out an average of only 24 flights per day.
