The Learjet 31 is a high speed, rear mounted twin engine light business jet manufactured by Learjet a subsidiary of Bombardier. This is a final derivative of the Learjet 23 first created in 1963. Powered by 2 Honeywell TFE731-2 3500Ib Geared Turbofan engines the Learjet 31 can take off from runways shorter than 3,500ft and climb to a typical cruising altitude of 45,000ft-47,000ft and a maximum of 51,000ft, a distinction only held by a small number of civilian aircraft.

First flight taking place on May 1987 and certification being awarded in August 1988, the Learjet 31 essentially combines the fuselage and powerplants of the 35 and 36 with the more modern “Longhorn” wing of the 55 and 60 models, almost four-foot high winglets and “delta fins” under the tail offering increased stability.

In 1990 after 38 Learjet 31’s were produced, they announced the 31A variant offering many modifications including increased cruising speed, a digital avionics system with Allied Signal (Honeywell) EFIS and an instrument panel layout change. The nose gear wheel is steered by a Steer by Wire system and the Windshield can be heated electrically. Singapore Airlines ordered four 31A’s modified for pilot training. A 31A-ER (Extended Range) version was introduced that is essentially a Model 31A with a higher maximum takeoff weight and able to carry extra fuel for additional range.

More than 250 of the type were delivered by Bombardier before production ended in 2003 to make way for the new Learjet 40 series in the entry level Bombardier range. However there are two after market modifications offered by Raisbeck Engineering. The Aft Fuselage Locker is an external storage container mounted below the rear fuselage that can hold 300 lb of baggage. Raisbeck also offer a drag reduction of up to 12% with its ZR LITE performance improvement package.
