Mardi Gras in New Orleans is known as the greatest free show on earth. Experience the legendary masked parades and elaborate floats at the 2017 Mardi Gras celebrations.
Traditionally, Mardi Gras marks the final day of partying and feasting before Ash Wednesday when Lent begins. However, carnival celebrations start weeks before that on the 6th January with the Feast of the Epiphany, when the three wise men were said to have visited Jesus. Mardi Gras in 2017 falls on the 28th February, but most people will arrive in New Orleans the weekend before to see the main parades.
French-Canadian settlers introduced Mardi Gras to America in the 18th century. The first official celebrations took place in New Orleans in 1857, when the Comus Krewe led the first parades, floats, and balls. In 1875, Governor Warmoth signed The Mardi Gras Act which declared Fat Tuesday a legal holiday in Louisiana.
Today, Mardi Gras is known for its stunning parades, which are organised by dozens of Krewes. Each Krewe picks an annual theme and will often spend a whole year and thousands of dollars constructing elaborate floats and costumes. The most famous ‘Super-Krewes’ include the Zulus, who throw coconuts into the crowd, and the Rex Krewe, who give out collectable doubloon coins engraved with their emblem. The Mardi Gras Indians are also renowned for their spectacular beaded and feathered hand-made costumes.
Festivities include flaming torches, as well as dance troupes and marching clubs that come decked out in glittery costumes. Spectators may spot a roller derby team called the Big Easy Rollergirls, or a group of scooter-riding men in Elvis costumes known as the Rolling Elvi. Many Krewes hold various after-parade parties, including elegant black tie balls. The Endymion Krewe put on a huge event in the Superdome with star performances.
Mardi Gras is free for everyone to attend and many people come dressed in costumes, including families who gather to picnic while they watch the show. To avoid the packed streets you can purchase bleacher seats to the parade or buy a special Mardi Gras package.
