The Vienna Opera Ball (Wiener Opernball in German) is the pinnacle of the city’s sophisticated ball season, which also includes a magnificent New Year Concert. The event takes place on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, which falls on the 23rd February in 2017. Its roots lie in dance evenings held by Viennese aristocrats during the 19th century and today the ball retains the style and grandeur of classic Viennese culture and the former Habsburg Empire.

The event begins with an opening ceremony at 10pm, when hundreds of young debutantes and their partners waltz into the ballroom dressed in white gowns and tuxedos. Their carefully choreographed dance is watched by over 5,000 guests and more than 1.3 million TV viewers around the world. This elegant spectacle is a rite of passage whereby the couples make their debut into Viennese high society.

When the Ball Master announces ‘All Waltz’, guests take to the floor and dance until dawn. The music is performed by the Vienna State Opera orchestra and includes the arresting waltzes of Johann Strauss, Carl Michael Ziehrer, and Joseph Lanner, as well as swing and foxtrot numbers. Throughout the night there are various interludes with stunning performances from top ballet dancers and opera singers, as well as traditional quadrille dancing. The night ends at 5am with a slow waltz, a number that typically closes all Viennese balls.

Hundreds of VIPs and celebrities attend the Vienna Opera Ball, making it one of the most esteemed events in the European social calendar. Guests will rub shoulders with famous people from the world of politics and business, including the Austrian president, as well as actors, musicians and aristocracy. In past years, international attendees have included Hilary Swank, Brooke Shields and Kim Kardashian.
