Flying heavy marine salvage equipment to a grounded cargo vessel
When a cargo vessel ran aground off the coast of Newfoundland, we were tasked with flying over 15 tonnes of marine salvage equipment from the United States for an urgent recovery operation. With the cargo too heavy to move by road and no suitable scheduled services running to the remote Canadian province, an aircraft charter was the only way of getting it there fast. The experts in our Houston office set about finding a solution.
Our Solution
Route: Houston > Gander
Aircraft: 737-800 BCF
We sourced a 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter, which could easily accommodate the heavy payload and was able to complete the journey to Canada non-stop.
With the aircraft confirmed, we liaised with handling agents in Newfoundland to find a suitable airport. Deer Lake Regional Airport was closest to the grounded vessel, but didn’t have the right offloading equipment, so we opted for the larger airport in Gander instead and the cargo was trucked from there to the coast.
The cargo was loaded onto the freighter using a main-deck loader, taking off promptly arriving in Canada in good time.
