About The Academy Awards

The Academy Awards date back to 1929, when MGM founder Louis B. Mayer organised the inaugural ceremony at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The nickname ‘Oscars’ was adopted 10 years later, after the academy’s executive director Margaret Herrick claimed the gold statue looked like her uncle Oscar. The awards were televised for the first time in 1953 and are watched by millions of viewers worldwide.
