Interview with Tomas Marek

Why is MAKS important for the global aviation industry?
“The sheer number of foreign suppliers, companies and buyers who attend the MAKS Air Show proves the event’s importance not just in Russia, but to the aviation industry worldwide. For PBS Velká Bíteš, attending MAKS Air Show has been really productive; we’ve met several potential new clients and made a number of deals.”

What did you present on the showfloor?
“Our most popular products so far have been our modified Tj40, Tj80 and Tj100 turbojet engines and the propeller-driven engine TR-100. All of these models have been available for a long time and are in steady demand, but are constantly under modification and revision. Although some of the models have been manufactured for 10 years, they have not lost their competitive edge. To give you an example, in 2015 our Tj40 engine won an award at the IDET trade fair at Veletrhy, Brno.”

What did you think of MAKS Air Show 2017?
“I liked the exhibition very much. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to spend much time on the showfloor as we have been incredibly busy at our own stall. We produce low-power jet engines for sailplanes, drones and large model aircraft. Very few companies produce similar goods, so thankfully we don’t need to view the other stalls to learn about our competition.

“Despite the lack of competing businesses, there were some stands that were interesting to us, especially those supplying repair parts and turboprop engines. We didn’t have time to look at the machinery in detail, but we did see some of the shows and aircraft. We particularly liked the ‘Legends of Aviation’ show.”

What do you see in the future of private aviation?
“Private aviation is definitely growing. More and more affordable models of airplanes are being produced – not just affordable for large businesses and corporations, but for ordinary people too. Our company is prospering, with a growing client base created by the increase in private jet ownership. This is a fantastic trend for all sectors of aviation.

“Right now it is the legal side, such as registering an aircraft and obtaining a flying license, which is restraining the development of private aviation. If in the future the legal elements of flying are simplified, I think private aviation will grow even more rapidly.”
