What You Need to Know about the ESPY Awards
Every year since 1993, the sports world has gathered at the ESPYs to celebrate the year’s best moments. At the ESPY Awards, short for the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards, everyone in the room is a fan. Superstar athletes and retired sports legends cheer each other on as the biggest plays and biggest games of the year are relived and rehashed.
As such, the theater is stuffed to the gills with sports superstars. The guest list is not yet confirmed, but the ESPYs are always spectacularly star-studded. Superstars like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Tom Brady and Steph Curry may be in the audience.
This year’s host has not been announced, but expectations are high for the 25th anniversary. In past years, the mic was helmed by athletes and celebrities like John Cena, Drake, Jon Hamm, Seth Meyers and Justin Timberlake. Details are is still coming in, but each year the show has surprises in store. There’s nothing like being there to see what happens live.
The evening’s awards include Best Game, Best NBA Player, Best WNBA Player, Best Male Athlete and Best Female Athlete. In addition to the performance-based trophies, a number of prestigious specialty awards are handed out. One of the biggest awards of the night is the Capital One Cup, which is awarded to the best Division I athletics programs for both men and women. Points are based on the final standings of the NCAA Championship as well as coaches’ polls. The Capital One Cup awards $400,000 in scholarships for student athletes.
A prestigious award handed out at the ESPYs is the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, awarded each year to an individual that perseveres in the face of adversity. Arthur Ashe was a tennis player who won three Grand Slams and died in 1993. He spoke out against apartheid in South Africa and came out to the world about his struggle with AIDS. The 2015 award was given to Caitlyn Jenner, and in 2016 to Zaevion Dobson, a high school football player who died shielding two young girls from gunfire.
The final award of the evening is the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance, which is always one of the most emotional moments of the event. The award is given in honor of Jimmy Valvano, a former college basketball coach who won the Arthur Ashe Courage Award in 1993 before he died of cancer less than two months later. The prestigious award is given to an athlete who overcomes obstacles through strength and perseverance.
