Controversial theme
The Met Gala, also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising gala that benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. The inaugural gala took place in 1948 and has since become one of the biggest red carpet events in the world – a meteoric rise in popularity that is often attributed to its influential host Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue. It This year’s Met Gala is held on May 7, 2018, following its tradition of taking place on the first Monday in May. Fittingly, this is also the title of a behind-the-scenes documentary (The First Monday in May) that shadows Wintour and Metropolitan Museum of Art artistic curator Andrew Bolton as they plan the 2015 Met Gala – the most successful ball in the event’s history.
Wintour and Bolton, not known for shying away from controversial themes, have pushed the boundaries again this year with the subject of “Heavenly Bodies – Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Designers from Christopher Kane to Jean-Paul Gaultier have referenced religious iconography through prints and silhouettes to highlight the symbiotic relationship between fashion and religion. This relationship also plays out in celebrity culture – particularly in the music industry, with stars like Lady Gaga and Madonna using religious iconography and imagery in their outfits, lyrics and music videos such as Judas and Like a Prayer.
The Vatican is loaning 40 rare items of religious significance from its archive to the museum in New York, which will go on display during the ball and the following weeks. This includes an 18,000 diamond-encrusted papal tiara and pieces worn by Pope Benedict 14th in the 1600s.

The 2018 Met Gala has a lot to live up to. 2017’s incredible production centred around avant-garde designer Rei Kawakubo and her fashion label Comme des Garçons, following 2016’s theme of “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” which attracted 752,995 visitors to the Metropolitan Museum of Art after the exhibition opened to the public following the Gala. And “China: Through The Looking Glass,” in 2015 was the most popular exhibition in the history of the Met, drawing 815,992 visitors.
Taking over for 2018 from last year’s co-hosts Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady are Donatella Versace, Amal Clooney and Rihanna. As far as the guest list goes, we won’t know who’s attending the gala until the night; but with past guests including Beyonce Knowles, Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian and the Beckhams, this year’s event is expected to be an equally star-studded affair featuring world-famous supermodels, Grammy-winning pop stars and Oscar-winning film stars.
