CITY GUIDE PLITVICE LAKES

Private jet charter and flights to Plitvice Lakes

This UNESCO-listed national park is a jaw-dropping wonderland and Croatia’s most popular natural spot. Located between Croatia’s capital Zagreb and coastal city of Zadar, Plitvice Lakes National Park is a world of limestone and chalk landscapes surrounded by dense forests where wild things roam. When it comes to the park’s highlights, the clue is in the name: it’s the string of 16 naturally formed lakes which are connected by waterfalls where water tumbles down like a voile curtain. Experience it all, charter a private jet today.

The park is well set up for visitors and it gets plenty of them; almost 2 million people head here each year to see the exceptional natural beauty, wander along boardwalks suspended above the lakes that are almost within touching distance of the falling water. There are two main access points – Entrance 1 to the north and entrance 2 which is located a few miles to the south – which serve the Lower Lakes and Upper Lakes respectively. After parking up at either entrance, there are buses and boats that take you where you want to go.

The Lower Lakes consist of just four of the 16 bodies of water: Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluderovac and Novakovica brod. This waterway system is situated in the Korana Gorge, a limestone canyon that’s up to 40 metres deep. You can follow the wooden walkways that wind their way over the water or peer down on the lakes and falls from various viewpoints along the trail that skims the edge of the canyon.

Two of the most dramatic waterfalls are located in the Lower Lakes. At Sastavci Slap, which is one of the most photographed spots in Croatia, water cascades down cliffside from the edge of Novakovica brod into the source of the Korana River 25 metres below. In the background, you can’t miss the highest waterfall in the park: the 78-metre-high Veliki Slap (Great Waterfall), which is fed by a river rather than the lake system.

The Upper Lakes portion of the park covers a much wider area and is at a higher elevation. The 12 lakes include Proscansko which is the highest, and Kozjak, the largest and deepest body of water in the national park. With many lakes comes plenty of connecting waterfalls where each lake flows into the next. The distances between attractions here is much larger but there are shuttle buses that largely follow the course of the lakes from Entrance 2. There’s also a ferry service that takes you between the north-western and south-eastern ends of Lake Kozjak.

While the more striking falls are located down in the Lower Lakes area, there are plenty of cascades to see, including Milanovacki Slap which marks the ‘border’ between the two sections of the –park. One of the prettiest falls in the national park is Galovacki Buk. This 16-metre –high-fall is fed by Milino Lake and tumbles down into the forest-encircled Gradinsko Lake.

Walking is one of the best ways to get around the park, whether you’re just exploring the Lower Lakes, seeing a few of the Upper Lakes or exploring the untouched forests that cover the rest of the national park. There are seven marked waterside trails that vary in length and difficulty, the majority of which will take in highlights such as Veliki Slap and Sastavci Slap. The most comprehensive of these hikes is trail K, a 13½-mile trail around the entire network of lakes. This is a great way to get away from the crowds (especially in summer) as most visitors just tend to focus on the poster-child sights.

Other trails away from the water include the 13-mile Corkova Uvala Trail through the forested western part of the park and the shorter Medvedek Trail which winds around the eastern side of the park and provides some beautiful views out over the breathtaking landscapes from its elevated position.

The two closest international airports to Plitvice Lakes National Park are Zadar Airport and Zagreb Airport Franj Tudman which are 56 and 62 miles away respectively. Simply contact one of our team and we will arrange everything you need to charter a private jet to Plitvice Lakes.
